Hot Rod Engine Tech chief John Baechtel gathered some parts and some friends to put together a 505 cu. in. big block Mopar. They did a good job, too–on a muggy, 100-degree day and running 91 octane pump gas from the local convenience store/gas station, the big motor made 664 peak hp and 680 lbs.-ft. of peak torque!

The build is based on a 440 cu. in. block from a motor home fitted with Milodon main bearing caps, align-honed, and over-bored .030 in. using torque plates. The rotating assembly features a Scat 4.250 in. stroke forged crankshaft, Scat big block Chevy H-beam connecting rods, and Diamond forged pistons fitted with custom-made Total Seal gas-ported piston rings. The pistons have a 24cc dish, yielding about 10.6:1 compression with the Trick Flow® PowerPort® 270 cylinder heads that will be used.
