The Two Guys Garage duo of Kevin Byrd and Willie B. decided they wanted to build an all-purpose performance car–something that can be driven on the street, run at the drag strip, and do some autocrossing. Oh yeah … they wanted to do it for under $20,000, including the cost of the car. So what car did they get? A C-5 Corvette! These Vettes are affordable now (Kevin and Willie got theirs for $11,000), and since they’re packing an all-aluminum LS1, extracting more performance out of one is easy. They used Two Guys Garage C-5 Corvette piston installation combos to help the rebuild. The guys added some new Sealed Power OE-replacement pistons and rings, a set of “799” casting aluminum heads off a 5.3L LS truck engine, and a Chevrolet Performance Z06-spec cam kit. The crew also used thinner Sealed Power head gaskets; combined with the 799 casting heads, compression is up about one point to around 11 to 1.
